South Carolina is ranked 16th in the nation. If they win out, They might have a shot to be better ranked for next year preseason polls. I know it is impossible for the Gamecocks to be in the BCS Championship with medorce offense and young defense. Is it possible to win the SEC this year, if not, How many year away.

No more than two years. I watched Smelley play QB at American Christian High School in Alabama and he is good. He will do nothing but get better. I would say next year but that might be stretching it some.

I think they have a shot in the near future, this year they had the fourth ranked recruiting class in the nation. I thi nk ti will continue, but who knows?
My prediction is two more years before they seriously contend, but Spurrier must stay

  3. Impossible = Nothing says:

Carolina has got to get some balance first. Because LSU has showed the rest of the SEC the blueprint to stop Spurrier this year. I never really believed in Blake from the Jump, and i not to found of Smelley but he is an upgrade. If Rice didnt leave for the NFL, i would have picked the lamecocks to pull it off.
But i like next year or year after next, his receivers will be a year older, as well as his O-line, the QB to lead them will be Garica. The defense is young but with another year they will be lightout. So i honestly like the shamecocks to do well next year.
had to throw that in Go clemson

the way the SEC is all over the place this year i think they can make a run at the SEC this year. as far as a BCS championship i think within 5 years they may be competing. spurrier is a hell of a recruiter.

South Carolina has come a long ways in the past few years. It has been the ol ball coaches plan to have a team win the SEC. Having watched SC play for years now, I have been much more impressed with them this year than many years before. As far as how long it will take them to win either the BCS or the SEC, I think it will be a long time. As long as Florida, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas continue putting dominant teams on the field, it will be very hard for the ‘Cocks to win the SEC. And now with the emergence of Kentucky as a decent (notice I didn’t say dominating or even good) team and Vandy showing improvement, it will be hard for any team from the SEC to win a BCS NC game…There will always be some b.s. team from some other conference going undefeated and pushing a more deserving SEC team with one loss out of the NC game.
Go to hell Austin….nobody asked anything about your USC. Keep your comments to posts about your team.
And just in case your wondering, I am praying for USC Trojans to win out so there will be a matchup b/w them and the Tigers from LSU in the NC game just so everybody can see who the better team is and quit with all of this week 1-4 trash talking….it is getting ridiculous.

First off the polls are ridiculously wrong! Yes, South Carolina has Stephen Spurrier as their head coach. But no, they aren’t that good! They beat Georgia, SO? Georgia isn’t that good either. Georgia beat Alabama in overtime. Alabama beat Arkansas in the last seconds of their game. Tennessee got blown out in their game with Florida. Vandy blew out Ole Miss, who gave Florida all they could handle.
The SEC isn’t that good! The SEC is a conference full of decent teams. Not good, not great, just decent. Each team in the SEC is capable of being each other any given Saturday.
Now to your question. Lee Corso said it best. Steve Spurrier will never “win” at South Carolina. He may pull an “upset” here and there, but will never win consistently. He will never win the East in the SEC. He’s a good college football coach, but he coaches at South Carolina. Plain and simple.

Next year maybe the following for an SEC title. BCS championship though?? I don’t think I can count that high. They would need a good 4 or 5 year stretch of SEC dominance( which is doubtful seeing how tough the east is) to solidify themselves as real contenders and have top teams want to play them to raise their ranking up enough to get a bid. I just dont see it though.

  12. TigerRag says:

    Win out????? are you serious?

  13. Tommy says:

The Gamecocks were my sleeper team in the SEC. Most sports analysts (what do they know) had said Spurrier will never win an SEC championship because it is South Carolina and up the road you have Clemson to compete for recruits. I thought what a bunch of morons. Maybe Spurrier cannot be successful in the pros but one thing is for sure he is quite successful in college and most of all in recruiting which is the key.
As far as the SEC championship, I give them a good chance two years from now and if they succeed they will have a good shot at the BCS. Spurrier needs two more recruiting classes. Oh yes, for all those dumb sports analysts the Gamecocks finished around sixth in the nation in recruiting last year and I expect the old ball coach to do equally as well this year.
I don’t like Spurrier but I respect him as an opponent.

  14. Zinger says:

They are not far away at all. They looked very good against LSU. Im thankful we played them before Florida because Spurrier managed to find a few weaknesses in our amazing defense. He didnt have enough talent to exploit the weakness and win, so now we can fix them before playing Florida. The defense wasnt bad at all for being so young, between the defense and the torrential rain, they managed to hurt our passing game.(Plus Miles got conservative at halftime).
Dont give up on them yet, they could still play LSU again for the SEC crown. I think they have a shot at beating Florida and winning the east. This year may be a bit soon, but they have a shot at it. Im thinking next year they have a very legitimate chance at winning the conference. Once Spurrier gets rid of the rest of the scrubs Holtz recruited and has all his guys in there, USC will be a contender. I predict 10-3, losing to LSU in the championship and going to a decent bowl and winning it.
